The most useful early move is not collecting more listings. It is deciding what kind of life the property needs to support, and recording what you learn as you go.
Days 1–30: define the decision
Begin by writing down why Spain is on the list. A weekend base, a move within two years, a rental plan and a retirement move each create different constraints. Add a full budget range, your preferred pace of life and a realistic horizon for travel.
Keep the early shortlist to a few contrasting areas. A tight comparison is more useful than an endlessly refreshed search.
Days 31–60: make the map real
Choose a first research trip around neighbourhoods rather than just individual homes. Travel the ordinary routes, return at a different time of day and note the questions a listing cannot answer: local services, seasonal change, access and the condition of nearby buildings.
Days 61–90: prepare the professional route
If one or two areas still fit, identify which independent professionals you may need before an offer is contemplated. Use this stage to learn what documents, fees and checks will enter your process, not to rush through them.
The takeaway
Confidence usually comes from making fewer assumptions and keeping a clearer record. The right home should sit within a place you understand and a process you have prepared for.
